By:- L.Steven Sanders
Infra-red scanning will be able to disclose an array of electrical problems before they become critical. Four electrical equipment problems that are routinely revealed by annual tests are: early stage equipment failure, inundated equipment, load disproportion, loose connections, as well as hot spots. Whenever issues are found, the customer, the infra-red scanning provider, or the repair service can easily correct them. In many instances, the scanning supplier offers equipment repair as well as replacement providers, an agreement that saves the client cash.

The benefits of infrared scanning

The majority of buildings have their distribution gear scanned yearly, and that is all it takes to show problems that create gradually. By utilizing tests to recognize apparatus problems, providers obtain the following advantages, among others:

Quick identification of challenges

When facilities realize they have an electrical problem but can’t determine what it is, they spend time and cash examining an issue that a scan might resolve within minutes. Instead of doing inspections as well as gear tests that may or may not reveal the issue, the facility can use infrared scanning to find out and overcome the problem on the same day.

Enhancement of maintenance high quality

With out the aid of scans, buildings carry out energy transfer switch upkeep, switch-gear upkeep, and other kinds of maintenance utilizing 3 basic techniques: visual examinations, electric assessments, as well as routine cleansing. While required in their own right, none of these types of procedures are as good at identifying and stopping apparatus issues as infrared scanning.

Prevention of costly substitutes as well as maintenance

If left undetected, situations in electric equipment can harm it to the stage where high priced fixes or alternate solutions are necessary. The point of electrical maintenance is to avoid these things from occurring. Yearly infrared scanning is the top precautionary upkeep measure for electrical equipment.

Decreased gear downtime

Problem devices are frequently de-energized as well as inspected manually. Then it continues to be de-energized while fixes are made. For buildings that can not afford extensive gear downtime, a scan may determine problems while equipment operates at full load, maintaining down time restricted to the repair process. In reality, scans ought to only be conducted whenever equipment is under full load.

Prevention of equipment failure

For the majority of facilities, the failure of electric devices are an expensive prospect. In add-on in order to needing repairs or replacements, additionally, it may need the use of emergency machines, or leave a service without energy when absolutely no generator exists. Through identifying issues early, annual infra-red scanning might help avoid equipment failing.

Prevention of accidents

In the event that remaining unaddressed, electrical equipment issues could lead to dangerous occasions for example arc flashes, which can significantly injure or kill electrical employees. Whenever these types of disasters happen, the monetary consequences could be serious. Consider the fallout that may result from just one arc flash event: workers comp statements, Has . 1 percent (Work Safety & Health Administration) penalties, lost gear, fireplace harm, damaged status, and lawsuits for suffering and pain. Tests play a vital role in stopping this stuff.

To learn more about the scan procedure, interested parties ought to contact a commercial electric services provider which has a established track report in electrical submission gear maintenance, maintenance, and replacement.

Unexpected emergency power supply system (EPSS) updates can improve a facility’s emergency power system in various ways, from reduced cost of generator operation to enhanced system manageability. In some instances, updates are stimulated by brand new codes and regulations, while in others, facilities pursue the monetary benefits of EPSS improvements. The types of upgrades obtainable through an emergency situation power supply provider are numerous. In the following paragraphs, we glance at five updates that may have a substantial economic effect on the businesses that employ them.

Transfer Switch Enhancement

A transfer switch changes a facility from utility power to generator energy when the former is inaccessible. Available in manually operated as well as automatic models, automatic switches are the favored choice for large facilities. They come in two sorts: make prior to break switches, which link a facility to electrical generator supply prior to removing it from utility supply, and break prior to make switches, which link it to electrical generator supply briefly before removing it from utility supply.

Based on a facility’s emergency situation power requirements, improving from the manual switch to an automated one, or from the make before break switch to break before make one, could effect its services throughout a energy outage. For instance, a medical center or information center could suffer serious financial losses if they lose electrical power. Almost every facility understands the importance of transfer switch maintenance, but transfer switch renewal could be essential as well.

Fuel Technology Upgrade

For facilities which have diesel generators, the price of fueling them could be significant. However with the implementation of the Bi-Fuel system, which replaces as much as 70% of diesel fuel with gas with an energy equivalent basis, the cost of fueling a generator can decrease significantly. Furthermore, a Bi-Fuel system can dramatically extend generator run-time, an invaluable benefit for facilities that require constant electricity.

Reduced Emissions

For facilities that are subject to hazardous air pollutant (HAP) regulations, reducing generator emissions via EPSS upgrades is a step toward reducing emissions taxes. Facilities can help to eliminate their generator emissions by retrofitting a filter or emissions control device on the generator’s engine exhaust stream, upgrades that can be performed by an emergency power service. Because gas burns cleaner than diesel, implementing a Bi-Fuel system may also reduce generator emissions.

Circuit Breaker Upgrade

To enhance the arc resistance of circuit breakers that use old insulator technology (e.g. oil vaporization), many facilities implement vacuum circuit breakers. Vacuum circuit breakers have minimal arcing since there is nothing to ionize aside from the contact material. Ideal for use within medium-voltage switchgear to 35,000 volts, vacuum circuit breakers can play a crucial role in protecting EPSS parts from electrical problems.

ECS Upgrade

The greater manageable an EPSS becomes, the less facility managers depend on 3rd party experts to resolve system issues. By implementing an electronic control system (ECS) with a digital user interface, facility managers can monitor an EPSS and perform troubleshooting by accessing data provided about the control panel. ECS upgrades allow companies to save cash by decreasing their service calls to third party experts.

Emergency situation generator rentals have a minimum of three purposes: to provide power when industrial electrical power is not available, to provide energy when industrial electrical power is tough to provide, and also to temporarily exchange a facility’s normal generator. With these purposes in your mind, we look at situations in which it becomes necessary to lease an electrical generator from an emergency power supply service.

Emergency situation power system substitutes

When facilities change their own emergency power structure (EPSS), they are without emergency situation power supply for a minimum of days, and sometimes several weeks. For some facilities, this does not pose a significant issue. But for others, especially those that depend on constant electricity to aid critical services (e.g. hospitals, data centers, defense organizations, and first response units), renting a stand-in unit until their new EPSS is installed and running may be the only option.

EPSS retrofits

Most EPSS retrofits take significantly less time than EPSS replacements. In fact, many retrofits could be completed in just one day. Nevertheless, for facilities that can’t afford for their emergency situation power system to become offline for even a couple of minutes, emergency generator rentals really are a necessity.

EPSS repairs

Although some facilities are able to afford to have their generation devices offline during the repair procedure, others can’t. When these facilities hire a power plan to perform repairs that require an EPSS to be offline, they may also rent generators from that service.

EPSS upkeep

When facilities have switchgear maintenance or any other type of maintenance performed that needs their EPSS to be off-line, they might require a stand-in generator to guarantee the availability of electricity, especially if a rest in electricity might lead to loss of important data or human life.

Power outages in the wake of disasters

When disasters strike, power outages can leave large areas without critical services, for example public water service, sewer service, and air conditioning. More often than not, supplying a rented emergency situation generator to individual households and businesses isn’t feasible. But rentals can be used to power large facilities where people can gather, such as community centers and indoor stadiums, until utility power is restored.

Situations in rural places

When events that require electricity are located in places where electricity is not available, rental generators are the only choice. Along with renting out generators for events in remote places, some power services also rent out power distribution units, connector cables, and other equipment essential to support such events.

Events that require high voltage

Behind the curtain at events that need plenty of electricity, such as concerts and well-attended public speeches, an emergency generator usually lurks, and frequently several. When events include lighting whose voltage needs exceed the supply capabilities from the host facility, rentals are a necessity.

Building sites

Depending on the work being performed, construction sites may require a number of generators to power high voltage machinery, in order to power multiple medium voltage tools that operate simultaneously. Rental generators are routinely found at everyday construction sites, and are also necessary for construction projects that occur in remote places.

The optimum time for a company to employ a electricity generator (also known as gen-set) is before it requires one. Unfortunately, countless businesses wait until it’s too late, and spend a power outage planning to contact a generator service in the near future. Some entities can withstand power outages better than others. But this really is certain: businesses which operate an electrical power generator is capable of doing business as usual during power outages, and corporations that don’t operate one typically can not. Generators come in various capacities with assorted features, and picking the proper one will make sure the next outage does not leave your property in the dark.

Basic Considerations for Choosing a Electrical Generator

Prior to deciding what gen-set to buy, a corporation should meet with a generator services provider. In the initial consultation, the provider will schedule an inspection of the customer’s facility to find out what type of unit is needed and how to do the installation. After the client knows which type of equipment it requires, they may start shopping. Additionally, they may expect the provider to suggest several choices.

For various corporations, the first issue of purchasing a gen-set is price. But it is vital to appear beyond a generator’s cost and determine the cost of operating it for years on end. For example, diesel generators typically are less expensive than gas models. But, because diesel is more expensive than natural gas, gas models are typically cheaper to operate. Companies should also consider purchasing a gen-set used, particularly when a quality model is available in refurbished form.

Although buying an electrical power generator used may seem risky, industrial models are recognized to offer decades of service, particularly when they are well maintained and retro-fitted with new technology as needed. To feel safe regarding buying generators used, corporations should observe the following steps:

only purchase from a professional seller of second hand generators (example avoid buying from business auctions or unqualified eBay merchants),

check the seller’s reputation in the Better Business Bureau (BBB),

ask for a copy of the generator’s official maintenance record, and

conduct a firsthand inspection of the generator, or have an expert 3rd party conduct the inspection.

Further Concerns

Once a corporation knows which kind of electrical power gen-set it requires, it will mindfully consider who should do the installation. Sometimes, corporations have generators installed by a construction provider, which puts them in the position of performing project management. A better option is to have a unit installed by a completely independent genset dealer who performs project management as a plan to its purchasers. With a dealer performing project management, projects have greater possibility of being finished promptly and within budget.

Another concern – one which will occur after a generator’s warranty is expired – is who should keep up with the power generator. A great many corporations have a generator’s manufacturer perform routine maintenance. But 3rd party routine maintenance can provide the same quality at a lower price. Unlike original equipment manufacturer (OEM) servicing costs, that are known to fluctuate, 3rd party charges remain set for that contract period.

While preparing to write this article, I learned a lot about switchgear systems and automatic transfer switch service at PrimePower.com

By:- L.Steven Sanders

There are numerous reports about accidents that occur when people mishandle a power device, most of which involve dangerous conduct, not conduct associated with repair. Yet, figures reveal that over a hundred individuals in the U.S. are killed year after year because they attempt routine servicing on power equipment, a figure that also indicates a good number of major but non-fatal injuries received during upkeep. How can you stay away from these incidents, or worse, death? Cautious behavior is a fantastic start, however, your safety ultimately depends upon figuring out your machine’s ideal repairs and maintenance process. In this post we discuss the routine maintenance process for any gang rip saw, also referred to as a ripsaw.

The Best Approach to Take Care Of Your Gang Rip Saw

Whether or not you buy your saw new or as a pre-owned woodworking machine, the 2-part safety process that comes before its servicing will be the same:

Step One: Remove Power from the Gang Rip Saw

This means removing all electrical, mechanized, pneumatic, and hydraulic power. The easiest method to ensure that power is removed before routine maintenance is posting a step-by-step “lockout” method that details how power ought to be removed. The process should also mention how staff would know that a lock out is necessary.

The Second Step: Carry Out the Lockout Method

While using the posted lock-out method as a guidebook, locking out a saw’s power should be quick. But be sure to finish the lockout process when you start it. Handing the job off to another laborer could be a recipe for disaster.

What Could Happen If the Lockout System Isn’t Followed?

Different wood working models pose different safety risks. But a rip saw poses several, particularly: being mangled by moving parts, being crushed as the saw’s top section moves to the down position, and electrocution. For the saw’s operator, such incidents could mean death, that could mean big lawsuits along with a damaged reputation for the organization that employed him. Posting a lockout procedure on the saw that indicates when a lock out ought to be performed is a strong deterrent to both injuries and lawsuits.

In addition to ensuring the safe upkeep of a ripsaw, it’s important too to make sure its safe operation by analyzing its safety and reliability prior to purchase, especially if the saw is purchased second-hand. A four-part method for arriving at quality used woodworking machinery is as follows:

The First Step: Purchase from Professional Sellers of Used Woodworking Machinery

Buying from professional sellers will ensure that your saw has been properly assessed for safety and dependability.

The Second step: Look into a Seller’s Record in the Better Business Bureau (BBB)

Whenever a seller truly places customers first, it won’t have unresolved customer complaints on its record. Avoid sellers that do.

Step Three: Ask for a Copy from the Saw’s Maintenance Record

Nothing predicts poor performance and constant repairs like poor maintenance. If your saw has spotty maintenance or perhaps a missing maintenance record, don’t buy it.

The Fourth step: Conduct a Firsthand Inspection

Conducting a first-hand evaluation will help you assess a saw’s general wear. If you can’t perform the inspection, have a trusted 3rd party carry it out for you.

When writing this article I found some great information about used woodworking equipment at www.RTMachine.com

By: Scott Lintern

Industries produce odors, acid, chemical, and NOx fumes. Controlling these types of health hazard elements is so important for preventing environmental releases, ensuring regulatory compliance, and protecting employees’ safety and health. Proper fume capture, control and scrubbing exhaust systems help companies to avoid these types of problems. A good scrubber must maximize the gas liquid contact area while minimizing the pressure drop through the scrubber.

The selection of the scrubbers depends on the type of application, level or efficiency of filtration and type of gas to be cleaned. Scrubbers are available in a number of different types, such as—

Impingement plate scrubbers

Packed bed scrubbers

Venturi scrubbers

Counter Flow fume scrubbers

Impingement Plate Scrubbers

If there is dust within the stream impingement plate scrubbers are recommended. In these scrubbers gas passes up through the openings in the perforated plates. In the design, an impingement baffle is used above each individual hole. These wetted baffles create tiny droplets that are the heart of the collection process. The benefit of these scrubbers is their high absorption efficiency, up to 98-99%, for gases and vapors by using sufficient number of plates.

Packed Bed Scrubbers

To remove gaseous or vaporous pollutants from an air stream packed bed scrubbers are used. In this process contaminated air stream is contacted with scrubbing liquor. This liquor absorbs or chemically reacts with the pollutants. Then the clean air is discharged to the atmosphere. The liquor that contains the chemicals is recycled and reused or disposed of in an approved manner.

Packed Bed Scrubbers are available in the following three designs—

Vertical Packed Tower Fume Scrubber

Horizontal Packed Bed Fume Scrubber

Chromic Acid Scrubber

Vertical Packed Tower Fume Scrubber is a counter-current unit custom designed to meet or exceed the specific removal efficiency required. Non-metallic construction is used for many installations, but special construction materials including stainless steel or FRP lined mild steel are available to meet specific applications. Some Vertical Packed Tower Fume Scrubbers are often included in complete pollution control systems to meet the demands of more complex processes for difficult to remove fumes.

Horizontal Packed Bed Fume Scrubbers are high efficiency, low maintenance scrubbers. It is used to remove water soluble contaminants by means of gas absorption or mechanical impingement. These units can be built in either horizontal or vertical designs, depending on space limitations or layout preference.

Hexavalent chrome mist which is emissioned from chrome plating and chromic acid anodizing operations can’t be removed effectively by conventional packed tower scrubber. Chromic Acid Scrubber is a modified type of horizontal scrubbing unit using specialized mesh filter pads with periodic flushing that is required to meet regulatory guidelines for this contaminant.

Venturi Scrubbers

To remove fine particles from volatile, hazardous or corrosive gas streams, or to handle gas streams containing solid materials Venturi scrubbers are often installed. It is mainly used for applications with high dust loadings. Collection efficiency for venturi scrubbers is 95-98.5% that depends on the stages they have, three, four or five.

Counter Flow Fume Scrubbers

For contaminants that are difficult to absorb for all airflow requirements counter flow fume scrubbers are designed. The advantage that it offers is in the efficient and effective use of scrubbing solutions. Fro high removal efficiency, mist and separating solutions carry-over at high gas velocity is minimized by the use of dry packed bed mist eliminators. To achieve a maximum in efficiency at a minimum of cost counter flow separators are available with a variety of tower internals.

According to the today’s industrial laws employee friendly industrial environment is a must. The use of a Fume Scrubber is an easy solution to the problem. To install a fume scrubber it is advisable to take the help of an expert as proper fume control equipment requires the proper installation and system integration to be the most effective.

Recent studies show that different industries release poisonous gases and fumes to the environment. These untreated fumes have an adverse effect both on the environment and on the employees working in the industries. So it is declared as a must for the companies to treat these fumes before releasing them in the environment. Fume Extraction Systems are the solution to this problem.

The process of treating, cleaning and removing the dangerous dust and fumes emitted from machines is known as fume extraction. Fume extraction systems are used to ensure the maximum extraction of the fumes. On the basis of the type of machine fume extraction systems are varies from industry to industry.

Different fume extraction systems are available that are highly efficient in extracting fumes in no time, such as–

Thermal Spraying Dust Extraction units are suitable for cold spray, plasma, arc and flame and high velocity oxyfuel (HVOF) spraying. This filtration system is considered as highly effective in filtering the dust and fumes. Some Thermal Spraying Dust Extraction units are available with explosive venting, fuel gas and oxygen sensors/alarms, safety door interlocking and sound attenuated booths with clean air inlets.

For trapping poisonous fumes from printing and chemical industries and welding fumes High Vacuum Fume Extraction system works great. Different companies offer High Vacuum Fume Extraction systems that are different in there capacity. These systems can handle 30 to 40 technicians at the same time.

Fume Extraction Arms are very effective to protect the operator breathing zones. To suit all the requirements a wide variety of arms and fans are available. This system is easy to positioning.

High Volume Entry Level Fume extraction systems are the compact low cost systems. These systems are capable of generating high air flow rates from a range of bench top attachments. These can be positioned comfortably under a bench with a simple installation kit to connect to the most suitable extraction accessory.

High Volume Level Fume extraction systems come with “High Vacuum (Tip) Extraction Units”. These systems are specifically designed for portability and extremely low noise levels.

Range – High Vacuum (Tip) Extraction Units are designed to extract and filter fumes and debris through small bore hoses and attachments. Ideally suitable for soldering iron tip extraction, vac pens, flexi fume arms and any application requiring close proximity micro extraction. These are also designed specifically for portability and extremely low noise levels.

ESD Safe Bench Top Fume Absorber is a cost effective fume handling solution. Aerodynamic design of fume-collecting hood enhances collection of harmful soldering fumes away from the operator through carbon-impregnated filter. Use of this type of fume extraction is recommended on every bench where central fume extraction is not available.

Fume extraction system are beneficial to employees. It helps the employees to be free from several health hazards. This system also ensures longer life to the machineries. Fumes can lead the machineries to there ultimate breakdown.

It is better to invest in the fume extraction system than to compromise with the health of the employees. It not only helps them to comply with the important industrial policies but also increases the goodwill of the company. To install a fume extraction system it is advisable to take the help of an experienced and professional company.

In the industries different equipments are used and these equipments exhausts fume that is containing different harmful elements. To make a work friendly environment for the employees it is become a must to control the fume of industrial environment. Even the governments are enforcing laws for controlling fume. As the need to improve air quality by reducing fume becomes more apparent and the industries are now searching for systems that can control fume and help them to obey the laws and also enhance their reputation by ensuring an employee working environment.

The ultimate goal of fume control is separating the worker from the contaminant. The traditional approach is to exhaust dusty air outside the industry. This is the simplest method, but it can be inefficient, expensive in colder climates and harmful for environment.

A good fume control system must ensure the following–

Identify the problem

Protect the worker

Maintain the quality of the work

Minimize the environmental impact

Remain cost effective

For controlling fume the first task is minimizing the fume by,

Eliminating fume-generating processes

Re-engineering the workplace to minimize and isolate fume generation

Changing to lower fume alternatives

Capturing fume at source before it reaches the worker

Providing personal protective equipment at the worker

Cleaning the air to reduce ambient hazards

Exchanging stale air with fresh

Capture Fume at Source

After minimizing the fume it is better to capture them in the source for controlling them. Never blow the fume away as it will affect the larger work environment. Using a vacuum capturing process is the best way. It takes the fume away from the worker. A well-placed source capture arms can capture the entire fume that is generated. Arms capture smoke from a defined area, and then easily move to cover other areas. Set a capturing arm in front of every machine and it will work effectively.

Filtered General Ventilation System

An efficient filtered general ventilation system can maintain a clean and safe work area by keeping the concentration of fume in air. Most of the industries have such a system but it is Important to improve the system for the efficiency of the system. Here some tips for it–

Make the application simple. The simpler the system is to use the easier it is to enforce. The fewer choices the worker has to make, the less chance they will forget or refuse.

When isolation and capture at source is not practical use respirators to protect the worker.

Maintain an effective filter as a good filtration system will capture the fume and dust, returning clean air typically capturing greater than 99 per cent of the contaminants.

Automate the capture and filtration system. Filtration can make up the largest cost of a fume capture system, but there are ways to minimize costs, while maintaining efficiencies.

Minimize noise by fan silencers and smart controls. They reduce noise and power consumption, while increasing filter life and efficiency.

Bring in the fresh air. Filtration can eliminate the dust and particulate, but does nothing about industrial gas buildup and oxygen depletion. Air exchange remains very important.

The releasing of gaseous substances into air is known as environment emissions as a result of combustion, manufacturing, and natural waste and other processes. Environment emissions are now regarded as a matter of conscious as they are classified as greenhouse gases. Greenhouse gases absorb and emit radiation within the thermal infrared range and contribute to the increasing of the heating of the earth. Because of these the climate of the earth is changing. Water vapor, carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, and ozone are the main greenhouse gases in the Earth’s atmosphere.

Carbon Dioxide emissions are the most common environment emission. Methane and Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) emissions are some other environmental emissions.

Carbon Dioxide Emissions

Through the carbon cycle and human activities like the burning of oil, coal and gas, and deforestation Carbon Dioxide Emissions are produced. But the carbon dioxide that is emitted from the carbon circle has a very little effect. Billions of tons of carbon dioxide are removed from the atmosphere, known as ‘sinks’, by oceans and growing plants. But these carbons are emitted back into the atmosphere through natural processes, known as ‘sources’. Because of these processes there is a balance as the total carbon dioxide emissions and removals from the entire carbon cycle are roughly equal.

The carbon emission that is occurred through human activities can’t be equaled through any natural process and this unequalled carbon has very bad effect upon the environment. Since the Industrial Revolution in 1700′s carbon emissions have increased. Now carbon is 35% higher than it was before the Industrial Revolution. Carbon Dioxide Emissions are responsible for about 80% of the problems related to Greenhouse Gas Emissions.

Methane Emissions

Methane emissions are another source of environmental emissions. Methane is emitted from human activities, fossil fuel production, animal husbandry, rice cultivation, biomass burning, and waste management, and natural sources, wetlands, gas hydrates, permafrost, termites, oceans, freshwater bodies, non-wetland soils, and other sources such as wildfires. More than 60 percent of global methane emissions are related to human-related activities.

Methane emission can vary from one country or region to another because it depends upon many factors such as climate, industrial and agricultural production characteristics, energy types and usage, and waste management practices. For example, one of the key biological processes that cause methane emissions in both human-related and natural sources is anaerobic digestion process upon which temperature and moisture have a significant effect. To capture and utilize methane from sources such as landfills, coal mines, and manure management systems different technologies are implemented which affect the emission levels from these sources.

Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) Emissions

CFCs, chlorine, bromine, fluorine et., are man-maid products. It could be found in aerosol canned products as hairspray and deodorant and house hold products like AC, fridge, washing machine etc. CFCs contribute in environment emissions by depleting the ozone layer. Both chlorine and bromine act to destroy ozone, but bromine acts about 45 times more effectively to do so. To recover the ozone layer we have to reduce the CFCs level from the environment.

Reducing environmental emissions totally is impossible but it can be minimized. Minimizing it becomes a must. Otherwise the world will face a gigantic and mortal effect.

By: Scott Lintern

Environmental change and its bad impact on the environment is the hot topic of recent times. Industries have very bad effect on the environment. They discharge different harmful elements in the environment. These elements make harm to our environment and are threatening the existence of the world. Governments are becoming aware of this problem and try to make up the problem by applying different rules and regulations on industries. So the industrialists are now becoming conscious and try to follow the rules.

Environmental consulting is a form of compliance consulting. Here the consultant ensures that the client maintains an appropriate measure of compliance with environmental regulations. Among many types of environmental consultants, main two groups are those who enter the field from the environmentalist side and who enter the field from the industry side.

An environmental consultant works on commercial contracts for both commercial and government organizations to address a variety of environmental issues for their clients in a number of areas, planning stages of a land development, or as part of an audit process, such as noise/vibration measuring, land and environmental management, waste management and measuring contamination of land and water. In the job there is a mixture of scientific data collection, auditing and analysis, reporting results and findings, partaking in presentations.

A scientific background is musty needed for an environmental consultant. A consultant is needed to gain a scientific qualification in subjects such as chemistry, physics, agricultural or horticultural studies, engineering, or urban and land studies. He also has to gain knowledge in ecology, geology, hydrogeology, organic chemistry or wildlife management.

A consultant also needs some personal skill. Communication skills are vital as he has to undertake a certain amount of public speaking or giving presentations. Strong IT skill is also required.

Assessment of air, land and water contamination, environmental impact assessment, environmental audit, waste management, development of environmental policy and development of environmental management systems are the fields and disciplines that the environmental consultants cover.

There is clearly a wide range of typical activities that an environmental consultant has to undertake on a day-to-day basis, such as–

Collecting data to establish a baseline condition for levels of pollution or contamination for a site or area of consideration.

Data interpretation means including detailed assessment of data, often using software modeling packages, to identify whether ‘contamination’ exists in accordance with legislative drivers.

Identification and consideration of the potential contaminant sources, critical pathways and receptors that could potentially have an adverse impact on the immediate and wider environment.

Completion of detailed scientific reporting, written in a manner that can be understood by non-technical people.

Dialogue with clients, regulators and sub-contractors.

Carrying out desk-based research to review previous investigations of a site that a client wants to purchase, and possibly undertaking field work, to identify previous activities on the site and any contamination.

Environmental consulting spans a wide spectrum of industry. The most basic industry that environmental consulting remains prominent in is the commercial estate market. Many commercial lenders rely on both small and large environmental firms. Many commercial lenders will not lend money to borrowers if the property or personal capital does not exceed the worth of the land. If an environmental problem is discovered, the property will loose its worth.

An environmental consultant plays a very important role. The help the industries to abide the rules thal the government passes for the industries and in this way they also help to keep the environment healthy.
